Some say you were discovered at 15 by a photographer in your hometown. Did your parents agree to let you model and travel around the world at such a young age to work in a very shady industry?
I wasn’t discovered by a photographer in my hometown. I pursued modeling as a career and reasearched the industry since the age of 12. I found a model search at a local mall made by a local model agency at the time was owned and run by Mary Ann Vansickle, a 50’s debutant who knew almost nothing about the high fashion world I wanted to be apart of.
The prize was a modeling class and signing with the local agency and potentially by NY Model Management that was brought to judge the event. I lost the first year I entered but won the second time around. After 6 months of modeling classes we had a local runway show that brought scout from around the US.
After the show one scout, Tony Perkins, from Vision LA was interested in interviewing with me and my mother. I ended up interviewing him! I needed up signing with Vision LA and later joining Marilyn NY a few months later. I ended my contract with the local model agency since I didn’t want a mother agency turning down work that I could get in NY working for famed photographer Steven Miesel. The same agent that helped me in the beginning in Ny is my agent still at the Society Model Management. I’m still with Vision LA as well!Did you have any dream job or other plans before getting into modelling?
Modeling was my dream job
Do you remember your first modelling job?
My first modeling gig was with a textile company called Lycra for Koch industries modeling stretch denim in Wichita, Kansas.
You were bullied multiple times as a child because of how you looked. How did the kids that bullied you react when they found out you started professionally modelling?
I was bullied and excluded a lot even by girls I considered friends growing up. I’m not sure, I didn’t talk to them after.
Could you tell us a bit about your iconic tweets, such as “I might be ugly but I'm the one who's walking paris fashion week”
That wasn’t me but a fake meme someone created.
You were also known for falling on the runways. How did you handle it after going backstage? Was it just awkward and embarrassing for you or did you just embrace it and move on?
Yes I did. The only time it was the worst was during a Versace show and I had a third degree sprain and had as go to the hospital the next day. I was terrified and injured and knew I had to walk a second runway for the same designer within the hour. I had a makeup artist couple give me some CBD oil to put to help the swelling. It was a lot of pressure and stress at a young age.
You were friends with Cara Delevingne, How did you guys meet?
We met backstage at Chanel and No we don’t speak anymore. Favorite memory we had a show in Singapore for Chanel together. That was pretty fun!
Who's a designer that made you feel special and confident when walking their shows?
Karl Lagerfeld
What would you say is your modelling horror story?
Probably a few editorials that put me in danger and also in the elements and bad weather. Big adventures but not always done with safety in mind.
What was the most exciting experience for you as a model?
Getting to shoot the first time in NY with Steven Miesel! I knew all the models when I showed up along with the makeup artist Pat McGrath and Julien Dys.
Is there a model you look up to?
I use to look up to a lot of women models growing up. Now it changes because I have met all the spoke I use to idolize. Cameron Russel is one model I look up to now because she is also an activist and writer.
What is your favorite print work?
Jobs with movement and video. I enjoyed every shoot I did with Tim Walker!
What is something you are proud of in your modelling journey?
Lasting this long and enduring this experience.
What was your favourite show you’ve walked for?
Any Chanel show, especially in Rome.
How did you know you were ready to return back to modelling?
When I could work on my feet for 7 hours again just in flat sneakers.
